Send National Weather Service (NWS) alerts to internal contacts at facilities within the affected area

Automated Facility Weather Alert: Setup 

Integrations listen for events with specific conditions and perform an action when those conditions are met.  These instructions will assist you in configuring an integration with a NWS Weather Alert event that sends and alert to the facilities in the affected area.

  1. Select Integrations from the drawer menu
  2. To create a new integration, click the blue + New button in the top right corner.
  3. Provide a name
  4. From the Event > Trigger field select one of the NWS Weather Alert - Nationwide triggers (see table below). Configure the conditions that must be met to send an weather alert.
    1. Select one or more Weather Phenomena 
    2. Some weather phenomena have Damage Threat Thresholds. If the Configure Damage Threat Thresholds button is visible select threat levels to take action on.
    3. Select the Severity Levels to filter the events by.
  5. From Event > Action select the Facility Weather Alert. Configure the alert to be sent when the weather conditions in the Trigger are met.
    1. Message Customization - The subject and body of the alert can be customized based on the weather event by using placeholders. Please refer to the Placeholder Instructions on how to use them.
    2. Weather Alert Sender - This is the account used to send the weather alerts.
    3. Recipient Searches - These searches select recipients based on the filters configured. If you would like the alert to include recipients at the facilities affected by the weather event you must include a Facilities filter that uses the Impacted Facilities reference.
    4. Facility Search (Optional) - Use to filter facilities by type or other attributes
    5. Select Contacts (Optional) - These contacts will always get the alert. 
    6. Select Groups (Optional) - The contacts in these groups will always get the alert.

      The contacts and groups are useful when a group that oversees weather events, such as, a operations center need to be notified. It's also recommended for auditing weather alerting.
    7. Mode - Only enable Live Mode once the weather integration has been tested and verified.
  6. Save the weather integration

Weather Alert Types

NWS Alert Usage Examples
NWS Weather Alert - Nationwide (New) This is the most common message type for NWS alerts. It represents the first issuance of a new warning, watch, advisory, or statement about a weather hazard or condition.
  • Initial Tornado Warning
  • First issuance of a Winter Storm Watch
  • New Flash Flood Warning
  • Initial Severe Thunderstorm Warning
NWS Weather Alert - Nationwide (Update) Used when modifying, extending, or providing additional information about a previously issued alert. The updated message replaces the original alert.
  • Extending the expiration time of a Tornado Warning
  • Adding new counties to a Winter Storm Watch
  • Updating the expected severity of a Hurricane Warning
  • Modifying the geographic area covered by a Flash Flood Warning
NWS Weather Alert - Nationwide (Cancel) Used to completely cancel a previously issued alert, typically when the hazardous conditions have ended or when an alert was issued in error.
  • Canceling a Tornado Warning when the storm weakens
  • Canceling a Winter Storm Watch when conditions improve
  • Canceling a false alarm Flash Flood Warning
  • Ending a Hurricane Warning after the storm passes
